Visitors to Perth and Kinross are being urged not to light campfires unless they have permission from the landowner. It comes after the mainly volunteer crew at Kinloch Rannoch Community Fire Station were called out to a wildfire on the shore of Loch Rannoch.
According to the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, stoves should always be used rather than open fires. The code adds that if an open fire is built, it should be kept small, under control and always supervised. People must not light open fires during prolonged dry periods or in areas such as forests, farmland or on peaty ground. Fires must not be located near buildings or in cultural heritage sites where damage can be easily caused. Never leave a fire unattended and always have a means to extinguish the fire on hand in case of an emergency.
It is also important to avoid lighting fires when high winds, high temperatures and low humidity are present or predicted. By Melanie Bonn.
